a genus of rodlike aerobic Gram-positive bacteria. Several species are responsible for opportunistic infections of the lung (see MAI complex). M. leprae ( Hansen's bacillus) the species that causes leprosy. M. tuberculosis ( Koch's bacillus) the species that causes tuberculosis.
