An animal pathogen that causes chronic enteritis (Johne's disease) in cattle. Subclinical infection is widespread in dairy herds, sheep, and goats (leading to reduced milk and meat production), as well as in rabbits and deer. Has been tentatively implicated in the aetiology of Crohn's disease in human beings. Infection may be acquired from unpasteurized milk.
