A family of toxins produced by Mycobacterium ulcerans; strains from different geographic areas produce distinct patterns of mycolactone congeners. Mycolactone has significant immunosuppressive effects and inhibits production of macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP-1α), MIP-1β, RANTES, interferon-γ-inducible protein 10, and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, but not IL-12, TNFα, or IL-6.
