An antibacterial and antitumour compound from Penicillium brevicompactum that inhibits de novo nucleotide synthesis. Mycophenolate mofetil (TN CellCept) is derived from the fungus Penicillium stoloniferum and is used in combination with ciclosporin and corticosteroids to prevent organ transplant rejection. Mycophenolate sodium (TN Myfortic) has similar properties.
