A group of haematological disorders in which there is reduced production of blood cells. Several different forms exist: refractory anaemia with or without ring sideroblasts (RA or RARS); refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia (RCMD); *5q minus syndrome; refractory anaemia with excess blasts (RAEB); unclassified myelodysplasia that does not fit into one of the other categories.
