A cytoskeletal protein (trabecular meshwork glucocorticoid-inducible response protein, TIGR, 504 aa) that is found in ocular tissues, including the trabecular meshwork, but also in most tissues other than brain, placenta, liver, kidney, spleen, and leucocytes. Levels of myocilin in the trabecular network can be up-regulated by steroids which leads to an increase in intraocular pressure. Optimedin has 40% amino acid similarity to myocilin and a comparable pattern of tissue expression. Mutations in the MYOC gene encoding myocilin are responsible for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
