Quick Reference

A member of the TGFβ superfamily (growth/differentiation factor-8a, GDF8, 375 aa) that regulates muscle mass. It is present in skeletal muscle as a 26-kDa mature glycoprotein (myostatin-immunoreactive protein) and is secreted into the plasma. Mutation of the myostatin gene can lead to hypertrophy of muscle and is common in some of the ‘double-muscled’ strains of cattle and sheep.
