A C-14 fatty acid that is a relatively uncommon acyl residue in phospholipids but is often post-translationally added to the amino group of N-terminal glycine in membrane-associated proteins and many viral proteins by myristoyl CoA:protein N-myristoyl transferase. Myristoylated proteins (e.g. small G proteins) bind strongly to membranes although the targeting mechanism is not clear. See MARCKS.
