Pain associated with inflammation or irritation of muscles or the fascia surrounding muscles. It usually involves the muscles of mastication as well as the neck and shoulder muscles. It is characterized by painful or sensitive areas (trigger points) in the muscle or the junction of the muscle and fascia. Diagnosis and treatment are difficult because there can be many causes including anxiety, trauma, systemic conditions, and muscle strain.
