Rinzai zen monk in Japan who was active in the period leading up to and following the Second World War in transmitting Zen to the United States (see America). He travelled to the USA several times and, while still in Japan, kept up a close correspondence with Nyogen Senzaki during the latter's missionary sojourn on the west coast of America. He was also noted as an artist, poet, and calligrapher.
