A fierce elephant of king Ajātaśatru that was sent by Devadatta to attack the Buddha on his almsround through the streets of Rājagṛha. A woman fleeing in terror dropped her child at the feet of the Buddha, and as the elephant was about to trample it the Buddha spoke to Nālagiri, suffused the beast with loving kindness, and stroked its forehead. At this the elephant sank to its knees, subdued.
