A member of a group of brahmins from the southwestern Indian state of Kerala. Some Nambūdiris still practise śrauta rituals; they are also part of a distinctive, temple-based, Tantric ritual tradition, adapted to their high-caste status and so shorne of impurities, a context in which they are referred to as ‘Tantris’. Śaṅkara is said to have been a Nambūdiri.
