A fossil of a member of the nanoplankton, the smallest of all marine organisms. Calcareous nannofossils, including coccoliths and an extinct (and probably artificial) group called nannoliths, are typically smaller than about 30 μm and may consist of spicules, juvenile foraminiferans, or calcispheres. Silicoflagellates, which are flagellates (see protozoa) that produce silica skeletons, also leave nannofossils. Nannofossils are used as stratigraphic indicators.
