(It.), napolitaine (Fr.). A light and simple type of madrigal, presumably of Neapolitan origin, and much like the villanella. During the 20th cent. a certain type of mus.‐hall song also took the name ‘Napolitana’: it usually had verses in the minor and chs. in the major.
