A widely revered Keralan reformer who fought to raise the status of his caste, the untouchable Izhavas, through a programme of school- and temple-building. His general strategy was one of Sanskritization, based on a reading of Śaṅkara's non-dualistic Advaita Vedānta which opposed it to caste and religious discrimination. He produced works in Malayalam, Sanskrit, and Tamil.
