In Burma.a class of spirits with supernatural powers who are venerated and invoked for mundane (laukika) benefits. They occupy a realm just below the heavens of the gods (deva). In former times images of 37 famous nats adorned the terrace of the Shwedagon Pagoda, but are now located in a nearby shrine. Some of the most powerful nats who are regarded as guardian deities (mahāgiri nats) have their home on Mt. Popa, some 30 miles from Pagān.
