Founded in Nottingham in 1897, the Association acts on behalf of it members in relation to their terms and conditions of employment, and provides a source of professional development, information, guidance, and support. In 1985 its membership was extended to include deputy head teachers; and, from 2000, assistant head teachers have also been entitled to membership. Members are drawn from both primary and secondary sectors, the current membership standing at in excess of 30 000 school leaders.
