One of the largest agencies of the US National Institutes of Health; it sponsors and funds research on cancer causes and prevention. This was the first condition-specific NIH institute, established in 1937. Its program grants support a nationwide network of cancer centers where the emphasis is on both treatment and research, and it supports many specific project grants. Its activities include oversight of a program of surveillance and end results of treatment. All are described at http://www.nci.nih.gov/. Similar agencies exist in several other countries, for instance the National Cancer Institute of Canada, information about which may be seen at http://www.ncic.cancer.ca.
