The division of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that is concerned with the collection and analysis of health statistics, i.e., national and some state data on mortality, morbidity, hospital discharge statistics, national health surveys, and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). It publishes many documents on these and other important sets of health statistics. Links to all these activities are available at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/default.htm. There are equivalent organizations in many other countries. The Canadian equivalent is the Canadian Institute for Health Information, at http://www.cihi.ca. The British equivalent is the Office for National Statistics, at http://www.statistics.gov.uk formerly the Office of Population, Census and Surveys.
