Secularly oriented Indian political party. Founded in 1885 as a nationalist party, but came to be associated with Hindu interests. Routed Muslim League candidates in a landslide victory in the 1937 elections. Refused to establish Hindu-Muslim coalition governments in Muslim-majority areas in India, sparking calls for a separate Muslim state and ultimately leading to the foundation of Pakistan as a homeland for Indian Muslims.
