Is an employer-led centre of excellence, designed to provide high-quality vocational education and training within a specific industrial sector. The creation of National Skills Academies was announced by the UK government in 2007, with twelve academies being created by 2008. The Academies are designed to occupy the apex of skills provision in the main sectors of the British economy, acting as beacons of excellence. Critically, they are established and sponsored by business, and though they may cooperate with state educational providers, they are independent of the traditional system of state provision.
