(NTO)

Replaced in 2002 by the sector skills councils, the NTOs were publicly funded bodies introduced in 1997 as part of the rationalization of education and training provision. Employer‐led, their role was to set occupational standards in their specialist vocational area, identify skills shortages and training needs, and help to promote and create an appropriately qualified workforce. The NTO for teachers in further education and the skills sector was the Further Education National Training Organization, which developed the first set of national standards for teachers in the sector, and which was subsequently replaced by the sector skills council, Lifelong Learning UK.
