Company founded in 1961 at the Dance Department of the University of Ghana under the direction of Albert Opoku with the aim to preserve and develop black African dance. Under the direction of F. Nii-Yartey (resident choreographer and director since 1976) it has focused primarily on traditional dance culture, as distinct from other Ghanaian companies that aim for the development of a more 21st-century aesthetic. It is now based at the National Theatre.
