Quick Reference

Introduced during the 1980s, this allows ships' radio officers to receive Marine Safety Information (MSI) automatically and in printed form from a dedicated receiver. Under the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System NAVTEX broadcasts MSI for coastal waters, up to about 480–640 kilometres (300–400 mls.) offshore. Mandatory for all commercial vessels, it is also suitable for larger yachts.
