A growth suppressor protein (321 aa) that interacts with the nerve growth factor receptor and induces terminal differentiation of postmitotic neurons in the brain. Necdin-like proteins are a family within the MAGE superfamily. Expression of the necdin gene is restricted to the paternal allele (see genomic imprinting), and necdin is one of several genes disrupted in Prader–Willi syndrome.
