Quick Reference

A theory used in sport psychology to predict task preferences and performance outcomes. The theory adopts an interactional model and considers that achievement motivation results from the interaction of five components: personality factors, situational factors: resultant or behavioural tendencies, emotional reactions, and achievement related behaviour. Achievement related behaviour results from the interaction of the other four components (high achievers tend to perform better when evaluated and select challenging tasks with intermediate risks; low achievers tend to avoid risky and challenging tasks, and perform less well when evaluated).
