A social form of motivation involving a need to seek out and enjoy close and cooperative relationships with other people, and to adhere and remain loyal to a friend. The concept was introduced by the US psychologist Henry Alexander Murray (1893–1988) in his book Explorations in Personality (1938). Also called affiliation need. N Aff or nAff abbrev.
