(1761–1803), United Irishman and founding editor of the Northern Star; born in Ballyroney, Co. Down, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He proposed the formation of the revolutionary society to Henry Joy McCracken in 1791, was imprisoned for sedition in 1796–8, and re-arrested in May 1798 having been wounded in an attempt to rescue Lord Edward Fitzgerald from prison.
