Quick Reference

A term used to designate the Advaita Vedānta-derived teachings of Vivekānanda. These provided the material for the Vedānta Society and the Rāmakrishna Mission to promote ‘Hinduism’ (essentially Advaita Vedānta) as a (in some sense the) world religion—one based on what were perceived to be universally valid, and scientifically consonant, ethical principles. See also Neo-Hinduism.
