Quick Reference

A cordlike structure that transmits impulses either from the brain or spinal cord to muscles and glands (motor nerves), or in the opposite direction from the sense organs to the brain and spinal cord ( sensory nerves). The nerve cell ( neurone) consists of a nucleated cell body with projections (dendrites) that receive stimuli. The nerve fibre (axon) is an extension of the neurone. There is a point of contact between one neurone and another (synapse). The conduction of a stimulus along a nerve fibre is dependent upon changes in the electrophysiological status of the nerve membrane.
