(Germany) The most important opposition movement against the rule of the Communist Party in East Germany, founded on 9 September 1989. It was composed of a wide range of people, including human rights activists, pastors, intellectuals, and artists. The Forum's intellectual and artistic bias led to its failure to appreciate the general desire among East Germans to give up their separate statehood in favour of German unification (and West German living standards). The Neues Forum quickly lost popular support and merged into the Bündnis '90, which in turn merged with the West German Green Party in 1993.
