Quick Reference

A family (NCP family) of highly variable cell-surface molecules involved in synaptic transmission and/or synapse formation. There are three neurexin genes, each producing two variants (α and β) that have identical cytoplasmic domains but differ in their extracellular domain. Neurexin Iα binds *α-latrotoxin and α-neurexins regulate presynaptic N- and P/Q-type calcium channels and are required for normal neurotransmitter release. β-Neurexin binds to presynaptic neuroligin and is involved in adhesion.
