A brain-specific protein (RC3, 78 aa) expressed in telencephalic neurons. It is a substrate for protein kinase C and expression is related to the development of dendritic spines and in postsynaptic plasticity. It is also a direct target for thyroid hormone. Neurogranin binds calmodulin and apparently enhances long-term potentiation and learning by promoting calcium-mediated signalling; knockout mice have learning difficulties.
