Quick Reference

A family of neuropeptides (100–200 aa). Four classes are recognized: kassinin-like, bombesin-like, neurotensin-like, and neuromedin U. Neuromedin U (NMU) acts on smooth muscle through G-protein-coupled receptors (NMU1R, 426 aa, in peripheral tissues, NMU2R in the brain) and can increase blood pressure, alter ion transport in the gut, control local blood flow, and regulate adrenocortical function. Levels of NMU in the ventromedial hypothalamus are reduced following fasting.
