A secreted serine peptidase of the chymotrypsin family (kallikrein-8, KLK8, EC 3.4.21.118, 260 aa) involved in neuronal plasticity and regeneration following injury. The involvement with plasticity is thought to bring a role in learning and memory. Neuropsin has 25–30% amino acid identity with other opsins and is expressed in the eye, brain, testis, and spinal cord. See neurosin; opsin.
