Private institution in Chicago, founded (1887) with a bequest from Walter Loomis Newberry (1804–68), a local banker. A reference and research collection of rare books and manuscripts concentrating on the humanities, it emphasizes western Europe and America, being particularly famous for its holdings on bibliography, the Renaissance, music, English and American literature and history, Portugal and Brazil, the trans-Mississippi West, American Indians, and fine printing. The library conducts research and educational programs.
