Part of R. Good's (The Geography of the Flowering Plants, 1974) Polynesian subkingdom, within his palaeotropical kingdom, which also includes the Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. It has a remarkably rich flora, with a qualitatively high degree of endemism. Some of the endemic genera, of which there are well over 100, constitute separate families (or nearly so). See also floral province and floristic region.
