New Earnings Survey

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

An annual UK government survey of earnings based on a representative sample of those within the pay-as-you-earn (PAYE) tax system. It is thus derived from companies' payroll information and is the main data source on earnings (including incentive payments and overtime) and hours of work in the UK. However, because the data are based on PAYE they exclude a large number of low-paid employees and for this reason the NES is not considered a satisfactory instrument for measuring the incidence of low pay within the UK economy.
