A party created in 1993 by Winston Raymond Peters (b. 1941), after Peters had been expelled from the National Party caucus in 1993. In 1996 the party gained seventeen seats and joined a coalition government with the National Party. However, it suffered from the government's unpopularity, and in 1998 it left the coalition. In 1999 it was returned with five seats. Advocating a tough line on immigration, the party surprised observers by gaining thirteen seats in the 2002 election. In 2005, it supported Helen Clark without entering a formal coalition with the Labour Party. In return, Peters was appointed Foreign Minister.http://www.nzfirst.org.nzThe official website of New Zealand First.
