Quick Reference

A heterodimeric transcription factor (p50 and p65 subunits) that was first identified as regulating genes for the κ class of immunoglobulins in B cells, but now known to activate the transcription of genes in a variety of cells and tissues. Inactive NFκB is bound to the protein IκB in the cytoplasm but various stimuli, including TNF, phorbol esters, and bacterial lipopolysaccharide trigger its release, allowing it to enter the nucleus and bind to DNA.
