Oligosaccharides that are post-translationally linked to protein through an amide bond with asparagine. They have a common core pentasaccharide Man3GlcNAc2, which is transferred from the dolichol precursor by oligosaccharyltransferase (OST) in the cisternal space of the endoplasmic reticulum, where further modification may also take place. High mannose N-glycans are also modified in the Golgi. The N-glycosylation site, where sugars are added, has a consensus -Asn-X-Ser/Thr-X, where X can be any amino acid except proline. Compare O-glycans.
