George Nicholls was born on 31 December 1781 at St. Kevern in Cornwall, and died on 24 March 1865 at home in Hyde Park Street, London. He was the eldest Child of Solomon Nicholls and his wife, Jane Millett of Helston. Nicholls was educated at St Kevern Churchtown school, then Helston grammar school and finally at Newton Abbot. In the winter of 1796–7 he was a midshipman on an East India Company ship; by 1809 he was a ship's master. He left the East India Company in 1815 following the destruction of his ship, in which he lost about £30,000.
