(c. 1736–1804) captain in the Continental navy, born in Chestertown, Maryland. Nicholson failed to capture or defeat a single enemy ship throughout the Revolutionary War. The Trumbull fought a fierce battle with the HMS Watt, but neither emerged victorious. Nicholson was later forced to surrender the Trumbull (1781).
