(1892–1971),

American theologian. From 1928 to 1960 he was Professor of Applied Christianity at the Union Theological Seminary, New York. He sought to return to the categories of the biblical revelation and was critical of both liberal theology and metaphysics; he reinstated the doctrine of original sin. He believed that Christianity had a direct prophetic vocation in relation to culture and for a generation his ‘Christian realism’ exercised an influential critique on American social and political institutions.
