Malaysian cleric and politician. A leader in Parti Islam Se Malaysia (PAS). Attended Darul Ulum Deoband, India, and obtained a master's degree from al-Azhar. Joined PAS in 1967 and won his first state legislative seat in 1969. Became PAS spiritual guide and served as chief minister of Kelantan from 1990 to 2002, working to make Kelantan a Malayo-Islamic state led by ulama.
