[P. V. Nikolskiy (1858–1940), Russian dermatologist] n. A phenomenon of skin fragility used as a diagnostic criterion, first described by Valsiliyevich Nikolskiy in 1894. In 1957 SirWilliamLutz described Nikolskiy's phenomenon as the condition in which gentle pressure applied to the mucosa may lead to the formation of a blister (bulla) in certain oral diseases such as pemphigus vulgaris.
