Russian monk and mystic. On a visit to Mount Athos he adopted the contemplative life of Hesychasm. Returning to Russia, he introduced a new form of the ascetic monastic life, that of the small group (skit) guided by a spiritual father (staretz), for which he wrote a Rule. Feast days, 7 Apr. and 7 May.
