born in Michigan, educated at Notre Dame (A.B., 1937), where he taught English and creative writing (1939–61), a career continued at the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago, and he has also been an editor of Poetry. His poems have been collected in The Iron Pastoral (1947), A Fountain in Kentucky (1950), Knowledge of the Evening (1960), Of Flesh and Bone (1967), and The Kiss (1982), 44 poems on physical, mystical, and symbolic kissing. His translations are the Poems of St. John of the Cross (1959) and Sappho to Valery (1971).
