Began as a Sunni Sufi order in the fourteenth century in southeast Iran but became Shii in the fifteenth century. Spread to the West in the mid-1970s. Emphasizes the universal, spiritual, and ethical aspects of Sufism and Islam, shariah, and the need to continuously practice silent remembrance of God (dhikr) while in the midst of productive activity in the world.
