1 The etymological explanation of a word.
2 (Nirukta) A commentary on the Nighaṇtu (a list of Vedic words), attributed to Yāska, and classified as one of the Vedāṅgas. The earliest extant work of its kind, the Nirukta attempts, through etymological analysis, to recover the meaning of, by that time, obscure Vedic passages in order to shore up ritual performance. Yāska argues that all nouns are derived from, and so traceable to, particular verbal roots or ‘bases’ (dhātus).
